an additional question touched on this issue, yet I wanted to questioning in much more detail. Mar is a noun that can be masculine or feminine. I have actually heard the there are subtle differences in connotations in between the two (for example, one sex is much more often offered in certain contexts, or one sounds more poetic or emotional). What precisely are the distinction senses the each gender has? are these connotations universal with the bsci-ch.org-speaking world, or room there local differences as well?

As RAE claims in the website it"s an ambiguous name, i.e. It accepts both genders, so grammatically it would certainly be correct to use any kind of of them, uneven for the expressions given there which just accept one.

You are watching: What does mar mean in spanish

Depending ~ above the region one is much more used 보다 the other. For instance in Spain the human being who live close to the sea (sailors) have tendency to say "la mar", despite in the rest of the country civilization use much more "el mar". Also, "la mar" sounds much more poetic, so it"s probably much more used in poems.

Anyway, there space expressions which are much more typical to it is in heard v one gender (at least haven"t heard in the other way), because that example:

In masculine:

Bajo el mar

En el fondo del mar

Mar abierto

In femenine:

la mar de (when it way much) e.g. Había la mar de gente - this have the right to only be supplied in femenine.

When speaking about the sort of the sea we have today it"s usually just in femenine, e.g. This ones:

Mar alta

Mar gruesa

Mar arbolada

Mar rizada

Actually the most usual is "el mar". When human being say "la mar" is to emphasize or to give a romantic meaning. Additionally seamen usage "nos vamos a la mar".

But in day-to-day bsci-ch.org human being say "el mar". It wake up something comparable with "el calor" and "la calor".
