Can you take NyQuil with amoxicillin?


NyQuilis a multi drug product used for the treatment of cold and flu symptoms. Amoxicillin is a penicillin antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections such as ear, nose and throat infections, genitourinary tract infections, lower respiratory infections (like pneumonia) and skin infections.

NyQuil and amoxicillin may safely be taken together as there is no drug interaction between the two medications .

NyQuil Cold & Flu Nighttime Relief is a multi drug product used in the treatment of cold and flu symptoms. It contains the following drugs:

Acetaminophen: Is a fever and pain reducer. Daily doses should not exceed 4 grams in adults. Dextromethorphan: Is a cough suppressant used in the treatment of dry, unproductive coughs. It is usually a well tolerated drug with drowsiness, stomach upsets and nausea/vomiting being the most common side effects reported. Doxylamine: Is a first generation antihistamine used as a sleep aid and in the treatment of runny nose and sneezing. First generation antihistamines are known to cause drowsiness. Besides drowsiness, other common side effects include dizziness, constipation, dry mouth and throat, blurred vision and urinary retention. Caution should be taken if taking with other medications that are known to cause drowsiness or sedation.Amoxicillin

Amoxicillin is a penicillin antibiotic. Antibiotics are used to treat bacterial infections, but do not treat a cold or flu, which are caused by viruses. Patients with a known penicillin allergy should not use amoxicillin.

As with all antibiotics, the medication should be taken as directed and therapy completed fully even if the symptoms disappear before completion of the prescription. Stopping antibiotics before finishing the complete course of therapy can lead to bacteria resistance and make subsequent infections more difficult to treat.

Taking NyQuil and amoxicillin together is considered safe with no known drug interactions. The amoxicillin therapy should be finished completely and not stopped when you are feeling better. NyQuil can be taken as needed.
